We have to be careful with our politicians out there. We need to double check all the information they give us, and also their diagrams. In his 2010 state of the union speech, President Obama put up this picture to show how well the economy was doing compared to other countries.
Based on the picture, determine what the gross domestic product (GDP) for the US should be. At the end of the week I will post the whole picture without the answer blurred out.
FYI. This is not meant to be pro or anti Obama. We are just merely double checking our politicians information.

Wouldn't you just have to add all the other countries GDP? I mean I think its 16.8 trillion, since that would be an answer that makes sense, (with the debt and all we have) LOL
ReplyDeleteHow is GDP related to debt, Elmer? I'm not trying to be snarky, I actually don't know.
ReplyDeleteDan Pham (Pd.7)
ReplyDeleteJust by looking at the sizes of the GDP bubbles, I would say that the 2010 GDP for the U.S. was about 35-40 trillion. Also, Elmer and Travis I don't believe that GDP has anything to do with other nations' GDP. It does stand for Gross DOMESTIC Product.
Travis that is a good question. Is GDP related to debt? Directly or Indirectly?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, guys I am looking for you to do actual math here to calculate what the GDP would be based on President Obama's picture. I do not want guesses here, I want you to do some math and show me how you did it. its not too bad so don't get scared away. Try again.
If you look at the smaller version of the data, next to the US and another country (I think it was China but I don't know) was a a length for the diameter of the circle. So I just divided VChina's diameter, which was 40 pi, by the US's diameter, which was 98 pi. you then get 24.5 pi. You then multiply China's GDP, 5.7 trillion, by 24 pi. And your final answer is $429,769,875,011.
ReplyDeleteWilliam,How did you find the measurement of US and China's circle?
ReplyDeleteJust in case william does not see this. If you look at the 2nd picture it has the pixel measurements of the diameters of each circle.
ReplyDeletebased on the number of pixels we are making more than twice the amount of money.40*2<98. the exact number based on the information given is $13.965 trillion dollars (98/40=2.45; 2.45*5.7=13.965)
ReplyDeleteLooking at both graphs you are able to see that the U.S is double the size of China. Looking at the second graph i say the pixels. I divide the U.S pixels and China's pixels to get an exact size difference in the circles. I got 2.45. (98/40) then once I hadd got that I multiplied 2.45 by China's GDP. To get the U.S GPD. (5.7*2.45) I got 13.965. $13.965 trillion dollars
